Friday Game Nights

Posted by: starlitgrove   in Daily Grind

On the gaming front, well, I’ve quit WoW. I haven’t been playing any online games lately. Friday nights are now boardgame nights at Casa Sta. Ana. We usually play 2-3 boardgames with some Rock Band in between, after imbibing on the yummiest tapsilog this side of Manila. I love the ate who cooks our tapsilog because she burns the sides of my eggs – just the way I like it. Yum.

These past few Fridays, we’ve also been having wine with our games, thanks to the ancient Dom that started it all.

The collection of boardgames to choose from for Friday’s game nights:

These games don’t get much play time because the setup alone takes hours!

To quench our gaming thirst:

A prayer has been answered, I think. We’ll see how it goes when we all gather together once more.

And in other news, our band has just had a makeover.

June!

I didn’t have a single entry for the month of May.

It’s the start of school again. Sadly, not for me. The NZ stint prevented me from applying to UP’s MTM this year. Again. *sigh* One more goal postponed for another year.

What happened in May?

Labor Day (Long) Weekend.

This is not a WoW post.

No, this is not another World of Warcraft post. But isn’t that screenie lovely? That’s me, trying to fly up to the moon.

On to the post.

I simply couldn’t wait for Atonement to open locally. I downloaded a clear DVD rip with subtitles and watched it today in between work and WoW. Amazingly beautiful film. I think this is one of those novel-to-film endeavors that succeeded in expressing the novel’s thoughts and feelings beautifully.

There is this particularly brilliant scene where the camera pans on this one long shot of soldiers at the beach. The soldiers are sick, dying, killing horses for meat, praying and singing songs of praise for strength! And the camera just captures all that – and we just soak it all up. Bloody brilliant.

Amazing performances by James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan, who played Robbie and Briony-at-age-13 respectively. Saoirse is a marvel, and really, all the acting nominations should be for her, not for Keira. Keira acts in just one way. She could easily have been portraying Elizabeth Bennett in her version of P&P in her portrayal of Cee. I’ve always thought that she has a resemblance to Winona Ryder, don’t you think? And so whenever I see her (Keira) in period pieces, I think of Winona in The Age of Innocence and I just wish it was her playing Keira’s role instead. But Saoirse’s Briony! She invokes such feelings of pity and anger and creepiness! She’s playing Susie Salmon in the film adaptation of The Lovely Bones. More creepiness.

Go see it when it opens! Or PM me for the correct file – some of the rips are either too huge or fuzzy. But no matter what, go see it. See it for creepy!Briony, see it if you’re a fan of the book, or of James McAvoy or

Next on the To-Watch list: There Will Be Blood with the great Daniel Day Lewis (who was with Winona in tAoI).
